AlphaWire’s new ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire

AlphaWire’s new ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire delivers outstanding high temperature performance in an ultra-thin package

Now Available at Aerco

ECA Fluoropolymer insulation; exceptionally wide temperature range; suits oil and gas, chemical, medical, military and other applications

Exceptionally thin and lightweight, Alpha Wire’s new ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire offers outstanding performance for a wide range of demanding applications and environments. ThermoThin is now available from Aerco, the distributor and stockist of electrical and electronic components servicing hi-rel markets. ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire delivers 600V performance across an exceptionally wide temperature range of -150degC to +300degC, and is well suited for applications where premium performance must be matched with space and weight savings. Strategic industries for ThermoThin include medical devices, semiconductor production, geothermal energy generation, energy production, military equipment and the oil and gas industry.  For military use, ThermoThin is suitable for applications where MIL-W-16878/4/5/6 type wires have been specified, but where a Mil Spec rating is not actually required.

ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire features ECA fluoropolymer insulation, a new material that combines the beneficial properties of perfluoroplastics while maintaining operational performance under extreme temperatures and harsh environmental conditions. ECA has excellent dielectric properties making ThermoThin resilient, as well as ultra-thin and light weight.  ThermoThin has similar characteristics to PTFE hookup wire but in a thinner and therefore far lighter form, saving space and weight. ThermoThin also boasts outstanding UV, chemical and water resistance, while its abrasion resistance is comparable to PTFE.  One stark difference between PTFE and the ECA material is ThermoThin’s ability to run longer continuous lengths. 1000 feet of PTFE typically consists of three separate pieces while ThermoThin can run for 5000 continuous feet.

ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire features nickel-plated copper conductor wire in sizes 36 to 16 AWG. In sizes 30 AWG to16 AWG it is approved to UL AWM 11540, UL 80degC Oil, UL Gas Res, horizontal flame and CE approved.  36 – 32 AWG sizes are CE approved.  It has Reach approval and is RoHS compliant. ThermoThin Hook-Up Wire is available in black, white, red, blue, green, orange, yellow, brown, violet, and slate with additional colours available on request and is in stock now at Aerco.

Modern hook-up wire improves design flexibility, reduces carbon footprint and saves on transportation costs

Various coloured wires with a field and the sky in the backgroundAerco now stocks a wide range of Alpha Wire EcoGen™ hook-up cable that has a diameter 50% and a weight 58% less than traditional PVC insulated hook-up wire.

Approved to UL AWM 11028, the cable contains no halogens, phthalates, or heavy metals and the mPPE thermoplastic insulation meets RoHS and WEEE requirements for the elimination of hazardous substances and recyclability.

Cable technical sales executive at Aerco, David Cairns, explains the advantages of using modern cable designs saying: “A popular cable is the Alpha 6712, a 24awg, 600V, 105°C rated cable with an overall diameter of just 1.09mm, a reduction of more than 50% over standard UL1015 PVC hook-up wire.  This improves design flexibility of modern, densely packed assemblies and its ‘green’ characteristics significantly decrease the carbon footprint. But, what is not always considered is that a typical 1000ft reel of PVC insulated cable weighs 2.46kg whereas a similar reel of Alpha 6712 weighs just 1.03kg, a reduction of 58% dramatically reducing transportation costs.”

Breaking Old Habits

Close up of cable split into 4 various coloured wiresWe all do it. We stick with the familiar, the ol’ faithful, the trusted recipe and the lucky pants. It’s worked before, so we know that it will work again. But if that’s the case, why isn’t everything made of wood, bone, leather and stone?

Because every now and again, something new comes along, a new material, a better way, one that will, in time, become the new standard, and that is what is happening today.

Alpha 3070 is a 24awg, 600V  and 105°C rated, UL1015 PVC insulated hook-up wire, and as standard as you can get. A 1000ft reel weighs 2.46kg, and it has an overall diameter of 2.23mm. This is what a colleague of mine called electric string, it was the base level in any design requiring 600V and 105°C

But, Alpha 6712 is also a 24awg, 600V and 105° rated cable, part of the EcoGen™ range. Approved to UL AWM 11028 it contains no halogens, phthalates, or heavy metals. The mPPE thermoplastic insulation is also easily recycled. It meets RoHS and WEEE requirements for the elimination of hazardous substances and recyclability. But, that’s not all. The overall diameter of this product 1.09mm a reduction of over 50%, and a 1000ft reel weighs 1.03kg, a reduction of 58%!

If it wasn’t for the other approvals that apply, this would bring it close to the requirements of cables used in avionics, and the savings in so called lifetime cost are not to be ignored either. With lighter, reduced diameter looms, the payload or the cost of transportation can be greatly reduced, decreasing the Carbon Footprint of your products.

So, if you are working in a design capacity, and you are about to go with the ol’ faithful, stop a moment, and contact us at Aerco Ltd, and we shall be pleased to help you break a habit of a lifetime

Aerco acquires cable and wire distributor, Electro Cables

Purchase will increase Aerco’s presence in the cable and wire marketAnn Hayes from Electro Cables shaking hands with Rob Laughton from Aerco

Aerco, the Horsham-based electrical component distributor, has acquired 100% of Electro Cables, the specialist distributor of wire and cable interconnection products.  The purchase is due to the planned retirement of the previous owners of the business.

Based in Nuneaton, Electro Cables was founded by David Hayes in 1983 to meet the need for a specialist, dedicated cable and wire distributor for the growing UK market and has been run since his death in 2006 by his wife Ann Hayes and Gordon Sears.

A UL registered company that conforms to ISO 9000 quality management standards, Electro Cables is a premier distributor and stockist for Alpha Wire and has a strong reputation for service and high quality.  Aerco will integrate the activities of the business with its existing operations over the coming months.

Electro Cables managing director, Ann Hayes, said: “When Gordon and I decided it was time to retire we sought a company that we felt would carry on the programme of work and support of our customers that we have been committed to for over 30 years.  After consultation with our leading supplier, Alpha Wire, we decided Aerco was that company and we are delighted that these plans have come to fruition.”

Managing director of Aerco, Rob Laughton, said: “Aerco is already a leading distributor of electrical components in the UK and this acquisition will strengthen our offering of cable, wire and associated accessories and widen the range of products that we offer our customers.  We are totally committed to building on the good work that Electro Cable has carried out over the past three decades.”
