Honeywell IHM Series Aerospace Proximity Sensors reduce maintenance costs and increase flight hours

Enhanced vibration and EMI specification; hermetic sealing; design to meet requirements of today’s composite aircraft

September 2017: Aerco, the distributor and stockist of electrical and electronic components servicing hi-rel markets, is now stocking Honeywell’s IHM Series Aerospace Proximity Sensors, which boast industry-leading indirect lightning and dielectric ruggedness, plus enhanced vibration and EMI specifications to meet challenging applications found in today’s composite aircraft.  Highly accurate and reliable, Honeywell IHM Series Aerospace Proximity Sensors are non-contact devices designed to sense the presence or absence of a target, providing on/off output, plus they can also be configured with an optional health monitoring output to the host system.

Honeywell IHM Series Proximity Sensors have a hermetically-sealed, all-welded stainless steel construction for exceptional robustness and durability in harsh environments, eliminating any potential for contamination. Due to their non-contact design technology, Honeywell IHM Series Proximity Sensors detect the presence or absence of a target regardless of the often very dirty conditions in which they operate, thereby eliminating mechanical failure mechanisms, increasing revenue and reducing maintenance costs by increasing Mean Time Between Failures (MTBFs) and so minimising downtime.  A further feature of the IHM Series Sensors is the optional third output state to indicate the health of the sensor (whether operating optimally or failed), which again reduces maintenance time and delayed flights, helping to lower overall maintenance costs across the lifetime of the aircraft. 

Honeywell has over 30 years’ experience designing proximity sensors for military and commercial aircraft, and designed the IHM Series with its patented FAVCO (Fixed Amplitude Variable Current Oscillator) technology circuit. The sensor is considered an improvement on traditional ECKO (Eddy Current Killed Oscillator) topology, which was the previous standard for aerospace applications. Honeywell IHM Series Aerospace Proximity Sensors detect and display a greater percentage of internal failure modes than competitive products. Examples of suitable aircraft applications include: status of doors (open/closed/locked); cargo loading latch detection (pallet locked); evacuation slide door-lock mechanism (correct actuation); flight controls (flap and slat skew/position and spoiler position); landing gear (uplock, downlock and Weight on Wheels) and Thrust Reverser Actuation System (TRAS) (stowed or deployed status).

Honeywell watertight sub-miniature switches available from Aerco

 Honeywell V Series switchesThe Honeywell V Series of waterproof, sub-miniature switches that is now available from Aerco provides a cost-effective sensing of presence or absence of an object.

Watertight to IP67, the V Series provides a wide selection of actuators, terminations and wire connections, offers a wide range of current ratings from 0.1 to 10.1A and is approved to UL/CSA, cUL, ENEC and CE.  It is the only V-switch in the industry rated up to 10 amps.

These characteristics, together with their small size and weight and high levels of reliability, make the switches highly suitable for high-current applications where spillage or water could be a factor such as are found in off-road vehicles, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, construction and agricultural machinery, industrial, office, medical and communication equipment, computers, electrical tools, heating and ventilation controls and marine systems.

Specific models can be supplied with wires pre-­attached to reduce installation times.

Honeywell board-mount pressure sensors from Aerco

The Honeywell NBP series of board-mount pressure sensors is now available from Aerco.  Designed to provide a high resolution, high quality cost-effective sensor for medical and industrial applications, these sensors are ideal for users who want to provide their own compensation, calibration and amplification. 

The NBP series measures absolute or gauge pressures.  The absolute versions have an internal vacuum reference and an output value proportional to absolute pressure.  The gauge versions are referenced to atmospheric pressure and provide an output proportional to pressure variations from atmosphere.   These sensors are intended for use with non-corrosive, non-ionic gases, such as air and other dry gases and for non-corrosive, non-ionic liquids.  All products are designed and manufactured according to ISO 9001.

Measuring only 7mm x 7mm, sensors in the NBP series are smaller than most board-mount pressure sensors and therefore are easier to place on densely-populated PCBs or in small devices.  Highly durable, they are ideal for tough environments and have an operating temperature range from -40 °C to 125 °C

They are available with either gel or non-gel coating and in numerous package styles, pressure ranges, housings and porting options and therefore provide a high degree of design flexibility allowing simple integration into many medical and industrial applications.


Honeywell high-pressure switches from Aerco are ideal for a wide range of tough applications

Honeywell high-pressure switchesThe Honeywell HPS Series of high-pressure switches, available in the UK from Aerco, is a range of durable and highly reliable pressure on/off switches.  Environmentally sealed to IP67 they are ideal for use in rugged applications that require the making or breaking of an electrical connection in response to a pressure change. 

With a life cycle rating of up to 2 million, a proof-pressure rating of 10,000psi and burst-pressure of 20,000psi, these high performance switches are ideal for transportation systems, heavy-duty construction and agricultural machinery, CNC machines, fracking equipment, presses and punches and any other industrial machinery that uses high pressure hydraulic fluids.  In addition, a wide selection of pressure ports and electrical terminations provide the capability to configure the switch to meet specific applications.

The operating temperature range of -40°C to 120°C makes them ideal for use in rugged outdoor applications while the pressure switching-point range of 150 to 4,500psi, a ±2% switching point accuracy and 5mA to 5A switching capability make them a sure choice for a wide range of applications from heavy loads to those connected to an electronic control unit.

The Honeywell HPS Series can be configured with either single-pole, single-throw (SPST) normally open or normally closed, or single pole, double throw (SPDT) circuitry.

Honeywell wireless limit switches available from Aerco

Honeywell wireless limit switchesHoneywell wireless limit switches, now available in the UK from Aerco, provide a high degree of flexibility, ensure more system uptime and offer a comprehensive range of standard options with a high level of system security while significantly reducing wiring, installation, commissioning and maintenance costs.

Conforming to the international IEEE 802.15.4 standard and featuring a 16-bit address and 128-bit AES security key, these wireless switches will provide presence and absence detection in remote parts of all types of machinery and will prove invaluable in all applications where wiring is not practical.  Up to 16 switches can be networked and simply reconfigured while issues with wire connection integrity on moving equipment are eliminated as is the need for wires, conduit, strain relief, clips, connectors and connection boxes.

The switches connect using 802.15.4 RF 2.4 GHz standard radio bands and radio connection is license-free and global with WPAN 802. 15.4, 2.4 GHz.  The communication range is up to 304 metres.

RoHS compliant and with full EMI immunity these new switches will find use in applications such as valve positioning, conveyors, cranes, jib and skew positioning, lifts, material handling door positioning, presses and CNC equipment.
