All you need to know about Solenoids

17 Jun 2024

Solenoids are versatile linear actuators capable of pulling or thrusting, commonly utilized in locking mechanisms. They play a crucial role in various industries due to their ability to convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. Among the various types, open frame and latching solenoids are distinct in their design and functionality.

HE & BS Benson Ltd, a renowned solenoid manufacturer with over 60 years of experience, offers a diverse range of solenoids, including open frame, latching, tubular, shotbolt solenoids, and electromagnets. Benson's in-house production capabilities enable them to efficiently cater to both small and large orders, allowing for customization to meet specific customer requirements.

Open frame solenoids are available in pull, thrust (push), or combination types, providing a simple yet robust action. They come in both AC and DC variants, common DC voltages are 12V and 24V. Common AC voltages: 110V, 115V, and 230V.

These solenoids feature long stroke designs for improved performance, standard 200mm leads, and optional return springs. Customizations include fixing arrangements, plunger couplings, thrust rods, and lead lengths.

Latching solenoids combine electromagnetic solenoids and permanent magnets. An electrical pulse to the solenoid coil closes the mechanism, and the permanent magnets maintain the closed position without continuous power. Releasing the plunger requires a low current pulse of opposite polarity. This makes latching solenoids ideal for applications needing continuous hold or battery operation.

Here's a closer look at how they are utilized in different applications:

  • Aircraft Seats: Solenoids are used in aircraft seats to control various functions such as reclining, lumbar support, and adjustment mechanisms. They ensure smooth and precise movement, enhancing passenger comfort and safety.
  • Locking Medical Cabinets: In medical settings, solenoids are vital for securing medication and equipment. They provide reliable and quick locking mechanisms that ensure the safety and security of sensitive medical supplies.
  • Lifting Equipment: Solenoids are commonly found in lifting equipment, including cranes and hoists. They enable precise control over the lifting and lowering of heavy loads, ensuring efficiency and safety in industrial and construction environments.
  • Fire Doors: In emergency situations, solenoids are used to control the automatic closing and opening of fire doors.

Both types of solenoids offered by Benson demonstrate their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, making them a reliable choice for various applications.  Speak to Aerco to find out more about Solenoids and how to choose the right one for your requirements.
