Honeywell BES EV Sensor

10 Mar 2025

The Honeywell Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensor (BES) is an automotive-grade solution designed for early detection of venting and thermal runaway in Lithium-Ion battery systems. Using a patented rate-of-change algorithm, it detects battery electrolyte vapor during the initial First Vent phase and hydrogen and carbon monoxide released in thermal runaway events.

Early detection of First Vent is critical, as it provides a 5 to 20-minute window before thermal runaway occurs, depending on the type and severity of battery abuse. This proactive monitoring enables timely intervention, reducing the likelihood of catastrophic failure. Unlike conventional ppm-based sensors, which rely on fixed concentration thresholds, the BES algorithm identifies rapid concentration changes to improve detection reliability while minimizing false negatives and false positives.

Designed for seamless integration, the BES eliminates the need for precise gas threshold validation, significantly reducing development costs and deployment time. It supports CAN 2.0B output with diagnostic features and is rigorously tested for a 15-year performance life, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh automotive environments with high shock and vibration exposure.

The BES is compatible with all Lithium-Ion chemistries and cell types and is resistant to siloxane poisoning, making it ideal for passenger EVs, light-duty and heavy-duty EVs, e-buses, and premium electric vehicles. Leveraging Nexceris Li-ion Tamer® technology, it enhances battery health monitoring, ensuring safer, more reliable electric mobility.

BES LITE is a cost-effective, low-profile, light-weight version designed for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Urban Air Mobility (UAM)/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Micro-mobility (Electric 2W/3W and Light industrial applications such as portable batteries, electric lawnmowers, etc.
