The connections behind the UK’s space ambitions

21 Sep 2026

As the UK strengthens its space capabilities, dependable connectors, cabling and specialist components will be fundamental to the missions, infrastructure and supply chains that make those ambitions possible.

Earlier this month, the UK Government brought its space priorities together in a consolidated strategy and road map, setting out its ambition to build a more competitive and resilient UK space sector.

The strategy focuses on satellite communications, space domain awareness, assured access to space and next-generation in-orbit capabilities. These ambitions may bring rockets, satellites, ground stations and advanced communications systems to mind but they all depend on a less visible layer of engineering.

Behind every satellite, launch system, radar installation, ground station and communications platform is a physical layer carrying power, signals and data. It includes connectors, cable assemblies, RF interconnects, backshells, fibre, shielding and power distribution, components that may seem small in isolation but become critical within a mission-critical system.

The technology we see depends on the connections we don’t

In most industries, a connector is easy to overlook. In space, it cannot be. Connectors may need to withstand intense launch vibration, extreme temperature changes, electromagnetic interference, and long operational lifetimes in environments where repair or replacement is difficult or impossible.

The same demands apply on the ground, where space domain awareness systems, communications infrastructure, radar and control networks rely on reliable high-speed data, RF performance, power transmission and robust physical connectivity. The sophistication of the overall system does not reduce the need for dependable hardware; it makes that hardware even more important.

Resilience starts deeper in the supply chain

Resilience is a central theme of the UK Space Strategy. A resilient space sector depends on more than satellites and services: it requires robust infrastructure, supply chains and supporting systems which, in turn, rely on dependable components and specialist technical expertise.

Resilience cannot be built solely at the top of the supply chain. It also depends on access to the right components, technical expertise, reliable sourcing, traceability and suppliers that understand the demands of aerospace and defence environments. Ambitious plans for satellite communications, launch, sensing and orbital technologies are only as dependable as the components inside them.

Where Aerco fits

For more than 70 years, Aerco has supported aerospace and defence customers with specialist components, technical expertise and supply-chain support. This kind of experience will be essential to help develop and grow the UK space sector.

Aerco works with high-reliability connectors, RF and coaxial products, cable, backshells, sensors, optoelectronics and other components designed for demanding applications. Our value extends beyond supplying parts: we help engineers identify suitable components, understand availability, manage obsolescence, reduce supply-chain risk and source specialist products from established manufacturers.

From satellite communications to launch systems

Each priority in the UK Space Strategy creates distinct engineering demands. Satellite communications require dependable RF performance, high-speed data transmission, power distribution and rugged interconnects. Space domain awareness relies on radar, sensing, networking and data-processing infrastructure. Launch systems place extreme demands on connectors, cabling and associated hardware, while in-orbit servicing and next-generation spacecraft add further constraints around weight, size, reliability and long-term performance.

The systems and missions differ, but they share one underlying requirement: reliable physical connectivity.

Connecting the UK's space ambitions

The UK Space Strategy sets an ambitious direction for the years ahead. Delivering it will require major programmes, innovative technologies and close collaboration across government, industry and the wider supply chain. It will also depend on thousands of components performing exactly as designed, every time.

At Aerco, that is the layer we understand. Britain’s space ambitions may be measured in satellites, missions and services, but they will depend on the physical connections that make them possible.
